KNOW THE BASICS

Avoid a life changing event
College is a fun experience like no other, but can lead to a
false sense of security putting you into harms way

Safety Tips for staying safe while at college

  1. Pay attention to your surroundings especially in quiet, secluded, or dark areas. You may need to put the phone away just for a bit when walking around campus. Never wear earbuds in both ears; stick to just one

  2. Avoid walking or taking a jog alone, especially at night. Take your roommate along even for a quick trip to the Starbuck's on campus

  3. Know where the emergency call buttons are located around campus and the campus police. Bookmark or save the campus map in your favorites or photos

  4. Save emergency contacts in your phone and add "ICE" before the contact name. Utilize safety apps, such as bsafe® to track your location or discretely alert emergency contacts with one touch of a button

  5. Never remain at a party after your buddy/friends leave. Go together & leave together!!!

  6. Have fun but be smart. Never become intoxicated to the point you can't remain alert or lose sight of where you are.

  7. Free is good but not always worth it. Do not take a drink from someone you don't know & trust unless you can watch it being prepared. Never leave your drink unattended. If you happen to walk away from it for even a second, don't drink it

  8. Carry pepper spray or take a self-defense class

  9. Know your way around campus. Learn more than one way to get to common places such as class, dorm room, or cafeteria

  10. Lastly, don't ignore warning signs. If something just doesn't seem right or you feel uncomfortable, it's time to go. Send a text to a friend or family member alerting them where you are, where you're headed, and check in with them once you reach your destination safely
